Types of Dentures

There are many types of dentures available, all of which are tailored to each patient. However, the most common types of dentures include:

Also called full dentures, complete dentures are used when you are missing all of your natural teeth. They are a removable option that consists of full teeth and gums and come in two forms:

Immediate Dentures

To prepare you for complete dentures, you may require some or all of your teeth to be extracted. If this is the case, your gums must heal before impressions and moulds can be taken of your mouth to make your permanent dentures. To ensure you aren’t without teeth, you will likely be fitted with immediate dentures.

Immediate dentures are made from moulds taken before your extraction surgery. Although they are a temporary solution, they allow our patients to have a full set of teeth while their tissues are healing.

Conventional Dentures

Once your gum tissue has healed, impressions are taken and used to design and manufacture your permanent dentures, also called conventional dentures. These will be your permanent set of dentures.

Used when only a few teeth are missing, partial dentures are artificial teeth held in place with clasps that attach to your natural, remaining teeth. Often called “partials”, partial dentures are an excellent option when you need just a few teeth to complete your smile.

Partial dentures are removable and should be taken out at night and for cleaning and storing purposes.

Denture Care

Just like natural teeth, your dentures require daily at-home care and professional dental care.

Dentures should be brushed twice a day with a dental brush and cleaner. Avoid using ordinary toothpaste, as it is very abrasive and could scratch the surface of your dentures.

At night, dentures should be removed and stored in a glass of dental cleanser or warm water. Be careful never to store them in hot water as this can cause them to deform and distort, compromising their fit.

We recommend going for annual appointments to ensure your dentures remain comfortable and so they can get any care or attention they need. Depending on your oral needs and whether or not your jaw has shrunk, your dentures may need to be readjusted or relined periodically.
