What Is a Root Canal?

A root canal is an endodontic therapy procedure that is performed when a cavity has gone untreated, causing the tooth pulp (the tissue inside the tooth) to become inflamed or infected. When this happens, a root canal must be done to clean and repair the tooth and protect neighbouring teeth from infection.

Signs You May Need a Root Canal

Often, a serious tooth infection is accompanied by severe tooth pain. Other signs include:

  • Sudden sensitivity to hot and cold
  • Swollen gums
  • Discolouration of the infected tooth
  • A chipped or cracked tooth
  • A loose tooth

However, these signs and symptoms can vary from patient to patient. The best way to determine if you need a root canal is by scheduling regular dental exams. If you have a cavity, our dentists will attend to it before it becomes severe enough to require a root canal.

How Is a Root Canal Performed?

A root canal involves removing infected or damaged tissue, also known as pulp. After applying local anesthesia or sedation, our dentists drill the centre of the tooth and remove the damaged and infected tissue. The area is then cleaned, disinfected, and sealed to keep it free from bacteria.

Depending on the severity of the infection and the size of the remaining hole, a filling may be inserted or we may suggest it is permanently sealed with an inlay or onlay or CEREC crown.
